Skiing and snowboarding are very popular sports and really do offer a great break from the winter blues. The ski season in the US generally lasts from mid-November to mid-April, depending on the resort and weather conditions. All ages can really enjoy this sport and you’ll see everything from toddlers to octogenarians ski clubs on the slopes. There are so many ski resorts in the US that it can be difficult to choose which one to visit. Yes, there are the big names like the world-famous resorts of Vail and Aspen, known around the world as excellent ski areas, and with good reason.
But do you know which is the largest ski resort in the United States? Major changes are underway and the largest ski area in the US is now Park City Mountain Resort.
The giant that operates the Vail ski resort took over Park City, after it was already operating the ski resort next door, Canyons. These 2 fantastic ski resorts are being combined to create one giant ski resort called Park City Mountain Resort. A big investment is adding a new “interconnecting” gondola to connect the 2 resorts between the Silverlodge lift in Park City and the Flatiron lift in Canyons. In addition to this new lift, there will be major upgrades to the Kingcon chairlift, changing it to a 6-person high-speed detachable chair and increasing its capacity. The Motherlode chairlift is being upgraded to a 4 person high speed detachable chairlift from the old fixed grip chairlift, making access to the slopes much easier.
From the new Interconnect Gondola, skiers and bikers will be able to unload at the top of Pine Cone Ridge (snow conditions permitting) and ski or board up Thaynes Canyon. There will also be new races from Pine Cone Ridge to the Canyons Iron Mountain area.
So if you love to ski, there will be plenty to ski on this mountain. The new ski area will have 7,300 acres of land, larger than Vail, and will have a wide variety of slopes, from green slopes for beginners to intermediate blue slopes and black areas for experts. The total combined elevations will extend for almost 23 miles and the vertical elevation will be 34,400 feet. In total, there will be 17 peaks to swoop down, after seeing the views from the top of course. All 14 bowls will be powder heaven, and after all, this area of Utah, USA, gets an average of 355 inches of snow per year, so the chances of some fresh epics are high. More than 300 ski slopes and more than 150 park features will be marked for those who love to strut their stuff in terrain parks. 8 half pipes, including the super pipe, will also be ideal for those who love to get some air.
The entire complex will be called Park City Mountain Resort and will continue to be connected to the city of Park City and Historic Main Street via the City Elevator. The old town of canyons is being rebranded as Park City’s base area for canyons, but the ski slopes leading out of the town will all be part of Park City Mountain Resort.
