The results can be spectacular. A stack of unsold Barbara Cartland paperbacks that they bought from someone who was dumping unsold books in a dustbin at the end of a car boot sale cost them £270.
“Counterintuitively, it seemed like books were a salable product when the audience was not local, but global,” says Mr. Downes.
The three told all this to the father of one of them, a local businessman, Arthur Maxfield, who was also curious about the potential of the Internet for buying and selling.

I like to start with http://www.BookSonmove.com. BooksOnMove says they’re for textbook buybacks only, but I’ve had luck checking prices for regular trade books. BooksOnMove will tell you which websites will currently pay for each book you are trying to sell. This will give you a good idea of whether or not your books are worth selling. Remember, all of these websites pay based on what they think they can sell the book for, so the books with the highest demand will sell for more.
I check the sale price of Go Set a Watchman, a hardcover book I paid full price for but honestly don’t want to see on my shelves ever again.
One thing before we go any further: you probably won’t make a lot of money from your books, unless you are a collector or plan to do this in high volume. You will be very lucky if you earn $1 per book. If you plan to sell books, wait until you have at least one stack of them ready to go. If you only have two or three books that you need to relocate, you’re better off putting them in a small free library.
