About 8 miles long and less than 2 miles wide, Cayo Santa María is located on the north coast of Cuba, near Jardines del Rey, about 250 miles from Havana. The island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, it lies in the Atlantic Ocean and is linked to the mainland by a causeway that took almost 10 years to rebuild in the late 1990s. The north of the island offers the best beaches and the better diving opportunities. To the south of the island you will find a maze of streams and lagoons, mangrove swamps and palm-fringed meadows.

Located south of Havana, Cayo Largo is part of the Canarreos archipelago.
