Chase away the boredom of the blues

Looking for fun activity ideas to do with your kids? Never hear the whiny words, “I’m bored” again. There are tons of fun things you can do to keep your kids busy while spending quality time with them.

Trampolines are always fun for kids of all ages. You can jump in with the kids and have a great time while burning unwanted calories. Host a jumping contest to see who can bounce the highest. Improve all those treasured games like Ring-Around-the-Roses by playing them on the trampoline.

Water is another thing that most children enjoy. From splashing around in puddles to throwing water toys, kids love them. Consider investing in an above-ground pool that is large enough for you and your children. You’ll have a good time splashing around. Don’t forget the rubber ducks and sailboats. A trip to the lake or ocean is also always a winning idea.

For older children, summer camp is another activity to drive away the sadness of boredom. There are a variety of camps available to suit your child’s interests and price range. If you are nervous about dropping off your child overnight, there are also many day camps available to keep your children busy during school holidays. Many colleges offer day camps to enrich your child’s academic skills. Fun activities like horseback riding, cheerleading, soccer, and other sports are available in abundance in most areas.

Have your own outdoor family challenge. Organize sack races, egg races and water activities and obstacle courses. Take a nature walk and see who can discover the most interesting. Bring a wagon for younger children or take the bikes and go for a ride.

Children also love to cook. It may be more difficult to clean, but it will certainly be more pleasant to prepare. Let the children help prepare their own snacks or meals. For breakfast, use some food coloring and make your own green eggs and ham. Afterward, snuggle together and read the Dr. Seuss version. For lunch, use cookie cutters to make sandwiches in creative shapes or stuff a celery stick with cheese or peanut butter. Pack everything up and go on a picnic, even if it’s right outside your own back door. Make cookies or brownies and have a surprise waiting for dad when he gets home from work. Consider wrapping up the treats and taking them to Grandma or an older neighbor and brightening their day.

Even on those rainy days, you can chase away the sadness of boredom. Get dressed up and host a tea party or picnic indoors. Put a blanket on the dining room table and pretend you’re camping. Bring disposable cameras for the kids to take photos on all of your outings, and let them make their own scrapbooks on those days when there’s too much clutter to go outside. Cut out the heads from some photos and use them to make paper dolls of your family. Let the children design and color the clothes.

Go fly a kite or teach your child to jump double Dutch. Play jacks or marbles with your children. If you enjoyed it when you were younger, they probably enjoy it too. Above all, be open-minded and flexible. Let your child have his own ideas of what he would like to do. Your children will appreciate the time you spend with them throughout their lives.
