arctic

In 1909, Robert Peary became the first person to reach the North Pole.
Antarctica
At the southern tip of the Earth we find Antarctica. This is the land surrounded by the ocean. Nobody except scientists and animals lives here. The earth is colder than the Arctic. While you do get seals, penguins, whales, and other animals, only insects can live here. The others use the land as a breeding ground, but then climb onto the ice to return north. The continent belongs to a few nations that also share it with more countries for scientific purposes. Robert Scott was ready to get to the Pole first. On the way there, he heard that Amundsen also hoped to reach the Pole. This competition was won by Amundsen, who reached the Pole 35 days before Scott. Scott and all of his men died on the way back. The cabin he built, which he never reached again, remains a silent monument to the great effort the early explorers put into it.
While you may think it doesn’t matter if you confuse the two parts of the world, today we know that they are so vital to the Earth system that we need to study them and find out exactly what can destroy them. When the ice break began, it was a wonderful time for the first people who wanted to reach the Pole. Now, the fact that the rupture will start sooner than expected is a great concern for scientists. This is like a child’s first cough, an indication of what is to come. We just don’t know how bad the flu will be and how long it will last.
