5 reasons to hate skiing

Skiing – When you watch shows on TV, it looks so cool and exciting. I wish I knew how to ski. Here’s a reality check: skiing is actually quite a dangerous sport. I certainly love the adrenaline rush of other sports. But there are some things about this sport that just aren’t for me. Let me tell you the five reasons to hate skiing:

It’s a dreadful sport – If you’ve ever been skiing, you know that just before going down the slope, everyone will be standing and awkwardly looking at their maps because they have those big gloves on. Well, that’s not why I hate skiing. Actually, it is waiting to go down the slope. Yes, when you see people going down, it is the speed and height that are especially scary when you wait for your turn. It’s not as bad as you sometimes think, but waiting with bated breath as you get ready to ski is the hard part.

Freezing cold winter – I hate the cold, that’s why I’d rather go to the beach in a tropical country during winter. But no, I am on a mountain with freezing weather that is even worse than winter at home. Yes, my face is numb and I begin to feel the cold through my bones. The only relief is when I can finally get back to the resort.

Injuries – Falling down is part of learning to ski. Even professionals keep losing their balance at one point or another. Well, in my case, I managed to scrape the side of my eye, bruise my cheek, and hit my nose so hard it bled. Nothing serious really since I know my limitations. But I hate hurting myself; it’s not funny.

It is expensive – once, I decided, that’s it. I’ll give skiing a try, so I hired an instructor. The instructor I got was kind enough but it sure didn’t work out. First, we went through the nursery slopes, which was fine. Finding you in the kids section is not exactly what I like. And when it comes to testing the toughest tracks, words just fail me, I’m afraid of heights.

Everybody says it’s easy – that’s why I find myself in a ski resort in the first place. Everyone keeps insisting that it’s easy, fun, and a great sport that you should practice annually. Meanwhile, my heart has sunk into my stomach as the people around me think it’s a great day for skiing.

That’s all; the five reasons why I hate skiing. I am sure that I am not the only one in this situation. Probably thousands of people around the world go through this nightmare every year with their families. Wait though, some people get over it. In fact, some are even beginning to love skiing.
