The Original Home of Baylor University: Now known for its hometown of Waco, Texas, Baylor University began life in Independence, TX for over four decades, a Washington County gem to be sure, but one with fortunes With changing finances and financial changes due to the Civil War, the move was made into Baylor’s current home in Waco.
4. Washington-on-the-Brazos – The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in the city of Washington, Texas. Washington-on-the-Brazos, as it is better known, is the place where Texas declared its desire to secede from Mexico, giving way to the birth of the Republic of Texas.
5. Sam Houston’s Dwelling Site: Sam Houston, one of the heroes of Texas independence, was known to be an arrogant individual, indulging in various vices throughout his life. However, it was in Independence, TX, that Houston would be baptized.
