New Delhi is covered in smog: how safe are we?

The earth on which we all live and roam may soon suffer destruction. The plausible reasons shown in the daily copy of newspapers tend to make us feel like one of those obvious cut clichés that we almost started to hate in the time that newspapers came into existence. Media coverage of the serious and alarming degree of pollution in the cities of Allahabad, Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida has now thrown the nation into a hopeless state of pandemonium. It has been quite evident in recent estimates that our country has a clear majority in giving the list of the ten most polluted cities of all time.

When the entire city of New Delhi covered by a blanket of smog decreased its visibility and the poisonous gases led to the prevalent dangerous diseases that spread throughout the nation; it was anticipated that if things were to worsen from here, the entire country would have suffered countless loss of life and death. The main reason attributed behind the smog was the harmful gases emitted into the air by factories and the dust emitted by the construction industry when demolishing a building. Somehow the government seemed hesitant to include the cause of the substantial amount of air pollution created by the burning of the firecrackers at the time of the Hindu Deepawali festival. Since the festival is more or less related to the religious feelings of the people, any such statement or comment could have been seen as sacrilege by the people. However, in my opinion, the harmful effects of this law should be brought to the fore in the eyes of the government and adequate measures should be taken to reduce its use throughout the country.

According to a report published by the United Nations, the degree of contamination measured in parts per million has exceeded the levels of the so-called extremely dangerous stage, which considers that the entire country needs to have passed a maximum alert situation. However, no such measures have been taken as people continue to suffer from nausea, choking, shortness of breath, airway obstruction, rashes and skin irritation. If the same conditions are to prevail in the country, it is clear that this land as a place of life would no longer be possible for humanity.
