Have you ever seen The Little Mermaid with Legs? Yes, but I’ll talk about that later in this article. Anyway, do you want to know some super cool facts about Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”? I’ll try to keep it rated G, but the truth is the truth. Straightforward, honest, and ridiculously funny, as you’ll soon discover.
This information may make you ask a simple question. Was this movie really intended for children?
Let’s go straight to that. The Little Mermaid was perhaps my favorite Disney movie growing up. Yeah, I guess I fell for Ariel, but what guy doesn’t?
Now for the fun facts:
In the musical version of The Little Mermaid, Úrsula sings a love song about Tritón, her brother. A bit strange, huh?
Ursula is undoubtedly based on the famous drag queen, Divine. Does that surprise you?
Ursula’s sidekicks Flotsam and Jetsam are her most prized possessions.
Why was Sebastian a red crab if he had a Jamaican accent?
Aladdin was jealous of Prince Eric, he felt that if he looked like him, he could have Ariel too.
Now onto the good stuff. The things you might wish you didn’t want to know. The things your kids don’t know, and I don’t advise you to tell them any time soon, however, you will get a good laugh out of this. I warn you, this might make you dig up your old Disney movies. Especially The Little Mermaid. It would be unfortunate if you didn’t find this as funny as most I share it with.
Now, the craziest facts about the movie:
A few things to note about Disney’s “Ariel.” First, do you know how old she was in the movie? Sixteen. Yeah 16, most people would never guess. Surprisingly, I learned this while at a Disney resort this year during a poolside trivia game (yes, the trivia girl looked a lot like Ariel, if you must know).
Úrsula had legs? Yes. In fact, when Ursala had legs, she was called Vanessa. She’s not exactly a name for such an evil woman.
Lastly, the film’s cover illustrator nearly got fired from his wonderful career at Disney. I wasn’t too happy about this, I’ll tell you why. Consequently, he drew a “dildo” on the first production cover to “stick” it to Disney. Funny, but true.
