What is AdSense and how can I get the most out of it?

What is it?

It is a program where website owners can use programs within Google and Yahoo to enable text, video, and banner ads on their sites.

Google or Yahoo receive revenue for services based on impression-based pay-per-click or cost-per-action.

AdSense is a good advertising platform for smaller sites with relatively few resources for sales programs, but it shouldn’t be overlooked by others.

How does AdSense work?

The webmaster inserts Java Script code into a web page. This is used to place advertisements on the page.

When a page with an AdSense tag is visited, Java Script creates an iframe and sets its “src” attribute to the pages URL.

For ads that are contextual, Google’s servers use a page cache. They then determine a set of high-value keywords. If these keywords have already been cached, the ad used for the keywords is based on the AdWords bidding system.

For site-targeted ad sites, the advertiser chooses which pages or pages to display ads on. They pay per impression or what advertisers choose to pay.

For search ads, they are added to the results list after a user searches the site within the search box. The revenue earned is shared between Google and the website owner. The ad must be clicked.

Mobile content is a way for the publisher to generate revenue from their mobile web pages using targeted Google ads. Google matches the ads to the content on your mobile website.

However, this was recently posted in various places and should be read in its entirety:

XHTML Compatibility

The HTML code for the AdSense search box is not validated as XHTML and does not follow modern website design principles:

or non-standard closing tags like and

or the boolean (minimized) attribute marked instead of marked=”marked”

o display attributes other than id, class, or style, such as bgcolor and align

or a table structure used for purely presentation (non-tabular) purposes

or the source tag

A way around this has been found by creating a normal html site containing just the AdSense ad units and then importing them into the xhtml document with an object tag.

For referrals, Google will add money to an advertiser’s account when a visitor downloads a referred service or product.

According to the Google AdSense articles found at: http://google.com/AdSense,

You need to follow the steps below to generate more income:

Visit the AdSense Settings tab and select Referrals as the product.

Tips for successful referrals for non-Google products:

o Choose subcategories for better targeting. When you use non-Google referrals, you can more tightly control the ads displayed on your site by selecting subcategories. For example, if you have an auto loan website, simply select the “Auto Financing” subcategory to receive ads related to that topic. Selecting subcategories improves your ad targeting and can also increase your referral earnings.

o Designate endorsement ads for your ad slots. Even if you know which ad you’d like to show on your site, it’s always better to have other ads to show if that specific ad becomes unavailable. By adding categories or keywords to your ad shopping cart, you can be sure that relevant ads will always show on your site, even though Google will always show your specific ad choice when available.

o Try to show only image-based ads. With our revamped referral units, you can choose to only display display ads. For some publishers, image ads are better suited to the look and feel of their sites than text ads. Choosing to display only image-based ads limits your available ad inventory, but you may prefer their aesthetic appeal on your pages.

Reports

New to Google AdSense is a report to track link URLs separately from other AdSense, for content units. These statistics show clicks and CTR per link.

To view these reports, go to the Reports tab.

Select AdSense for content

Choose the URLs

The combined report will look similar to what you’re used to seeing (if you already use AdSense), as far as content reports go.

Choose Add Link Unit Reports for more clarity in reporting.

Google isn’t the only one with AdSense. Yahoo does too.

Development

Development starts with content that is valuable, which attracts AdSense ads that, in turn, pay more when clicked on.

The use of traffic techniques that generate many different responses that are not limited to just online advertising is part of the development.

Remember to use sponsored links and ad phrases on the website to encourage the visitor to click on the ads.

To maximize your earnings

Always start with:

write fluently

keep the topic

Show your knowledge about the topic

On ad positioning:

When users are focused on a particular article they are reading, it is better to place the ad at the bottom of the page.

You need to think about the content and how the reader will react to a particular page. In some cases, a top-of-the-page ad is better and, in turn, gets more views. These are the ones that are close to rich context and navigation aids.

Note that in general, dark orange gives the best performance, while light yellow gives the weakest performance. However, you should match your colors with the background of your article or blog, with the ad. Use bold borders around the ad.

Take your ad and customize it to look just like your website. This brings a flow between your ads and your website.

Many top marketers have found that the large rectangle format for ads generates more clicks.

Last but not least, place your keywords in the title of your blog.
