The waterfront area of Canada’s largest city is undergoing a complete makeover. While some things remain the same, like the old antique markets and a popular amusement park, many others are changing along the Toronto Harbor.
The area has been in constant flux since its inception. From mudflats, to a garbage disposal area, to a place for container ships to dock, load or unload. At one time the largest distillery in the world was located here. Once heavily used for industry, rail and shipping, it is now becoming a residential, cultural and recreational center.
Toronto, like many coastal cities around the world, is using one of its best assets to attract tourists and improve the quality of life for its residents. Since the early 1970s, the port area has drawn more and more people to the shoreline for fun.
At the beginning of this evolution was the construction of a fun and entertainment center. The city then unveiled the world’s tallest tower now complete with a revolving restaurant providing a 360-degree view of the cityscape and waterfront. It is also home to the highest wine cellar in the world, among other features.
Many of the more recent changes pay homage to the history and culture of the city and country. The projects incorporate the latest in environmentally conscious design. Buildings and public spaces are built to enhance habitat for human, aquatic, and wildlife.
City residents, innovative architects and urban planners came together to create truly fascinating and imaginative spaces. One area creates a small urban beach and park that incorporates maple leaf art and acknowledges nearby commercial activity. Residents and tourists alike can watch tankers full of sugar being unloaded at the refinery in full view from the beach and park, or even cruise ships.
For those with an interest in watching or participating in sports or fitness, the harbor area is home to ice skating rinks in the winter and a major league baseball park in the summer. Several walking and running trails already exist and more are planned. Wave decks and walkways have been built to provide easier access to the water along with sandy and cobblestone beaches.
Hop on a ferry to the islands across the way, where many people reside and commute to the city every day. It is also home to a small airport and even more space for parks. Rent bikes or pedal boats here too.
The docks in the Toronto Harbor are known as piers. Queen’s Quay is the most central, but each quay offers a different feel and experience. Along the harbor are areas lined with shops for antique or fine art hunters. Many restaurants and pubs offer opportunities for casual or fine dining. There are hotels and residential condominiums located where the warehouses once stood.
Toronto has always been a city worth visiting, but now the waterfront area is a destination on its own. After spending time exploring various parts of this wonderful city, visitors will want to set aside extra time to play in the water.
