Who is the best coach to reach your goals?

A friend of mine was recently at a Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen workshop. They were promoting their Enlightened Millionaire Program. One of the topics he told me they covered was finding a personal trainer.

So let’s think of a few topics where there might be personal trainers.

Basketball

Golf

Football

talk show

Weightlifting

Confidence

Money

Sex

Real estate investor

Now what I found interesting was what my friend said, everyone answered for some of the above. They thought the best basketball coach would be Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods for golf, Joe Montana for soccer, Weightlifting many would like Arnold Schwarzenegger to be their personal trainer, trusting Anthony Robbins of NLP fame was chosen, Money said they would do it like Donald Trump or Bill Gates, Sex and they would answer to Ron Jeremy, Real Estate a lot responded to Robert Kiyosaki of Poor Dad Rich Dad fame.

The logic here may seem great. If you want to be good at a particular skill, find someone who is well known for being excellent at that talent or skill. Sometimes, however, that is not exactly the case.

My friend continued on how he thought of the Green Bay Packers then, as they had won two superbowls. The unexpected had happened, his beloved coach Vince Lombardi decided that coaching the Green Bay Packers was no longer what he wanted to do. The Green Bay Packers actually tested two coaches and tried the above after the other two coaches failed. The Packers took on Bart Starr, their successful quarterback, as their new coach. He’s a great quarterback, but he didn’t do as well as a coach.

Many people don’t realize that game skills and training skills are two different mediums. Vince Lombardi was never a great soccer player, but he is an incredible coach.

If you wanted a real estate investment coach, many people would choose Robert Kiyosaki. Well, who were your mentors? Where did you learn about houses and real estate? Was he self-taught? Or did you learn from someone else? Turns out Robert Kiyosaki learned a lot from John Burley about real estate investing. John Burley also teaches and trains others and many of his students are successful.

Michael Jordan, the famous basketball player, has also been a coach. Look at the results of him coaching basketball teams. He is one of the most incredible basketball players, but his coaching skills don’t even come close to his playing skills.

The Wizards, the Washington team he leads, have failed under Jordan’s leadership. They were 110-179 after Jordan started making the decisions and leaving the team. Not exactly the best performance. The Wizards soon kicked him off as a coach.

Now let’s take the famous Tiger Woods. He went crazy when he started winning so much at golf. One day he decided to fire Butch Harmon. Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major tournament since the 2002 US Open. That was the same year he stopped having Butch Harmon as his coach. “Tiger Woods is not playing well, he is not working on the right things on his golf swing, although obviously Tiger thinks he is,” Harmon told a reporter for a Sky Sports media editor. Woods was 72 of two over par in his first round at the US Open. Woods is not the same golfer who won 7 of 11 majors beginning with the 1999 PGA Championship, and he readily admits it. How much credit do you think Butch Harmon deserves here? Some top coaches say they see problems with his swing and think the fact that Tiger doesn’t have Butch around is a big reason for it.

So remember when you are looking for a coach. The best thing to look at is the student results. Who has the best students? That’s what your coach should be.
