Nowadays it’s very easy to get a laptop to download a crack version of beat making software and start making beats. A lot of producers are doing it and now a lot of rappers see how easy it is and are taking the same path. Is there a problem with this? Absolutely NOT if you look at some of the biggest artists to have made history, many of them have done just that. Artists like Kanye West, Soulja Boy, Tyler the Creator, and many more took the multifaceted route. How much time and effort they put into making their production is another story, but HEY, they made it work! However, there are definitely a few things a rapper should keep in mind if he chooses to take this path.

WEATHER

Timing is a very important aspect to consider if you choose to be a producing rapper. Will you have enough time to work on your rap skills while simultaneously learning how to produce? One thing to keep in mind when taking this route is to maybe split it up. You could definitely do it all at once, but if you really want quality music, you’re going to have to pay attention and focus on the ins and outs of how a trade works. That’s not to say you can’t spend a couple of weeks in some beat making software, make a beat, add some vocals to it, and have a hit record. It is definitely possible but also very RARE for that to happen. SO DON’T THROW ALL YOUR EGGS IN THAT BASKET. Even Soulja boy had to spend some time learning the FL Studio program and getting used to the tools and features he had to work with. However, in exchange, he had also sacrificed some of his artistic ability, which brings me to my next point.

POOR

Music is an art based on free flowing emotion. You can make the simplest beat add some vocals on top of it and people will feel it. Here’s the thing though, PEOPLE know when something is quality and when something comes together. That’s what separates the best from the mediocre! I’m not saying you can’t be the best at more than one thing, BUT if you look at the real big players in the music game, those are the ones who stuck to one thing and really mastered it AND THEN moved on to something else. stuff. For example, Jay Z is considered one of the best rappers of our time. He doesn’t produce, he just raps. He focused all of his strength on that one thing and now he’s one of the best. Just take a look at all the greats in the field from him Tupac, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Timbaland, Pharrell, Zaytoven, etc. AGAIN, I’m not saying it’s not possible to be multifaceted, BUT remember that you’ll have to sacrifice being excellent in one aspect during that process, therefore putting a side of what you do in mediocrity. You should always strive to be THE BEST.

INVEST IN YOURSELF

If you really want to do business in this music industry or any other industry, you’re going to have to invest in yourself. People who try to find loopholes in everything never really prosper. You hear the stories about broke rappers who made it out of thin air all the time, but one thing I can assure you about them is that they DID PAY. Everyone has to pay their fair share, you can’t help it anyway. Everyone has their own situation, some people are fine, some people are BROKEN, but you just have to live within your means. If you have $100 to your name, find a way to take $50-$75 of that and invest it in yourself, your presentation, your craft. It takes money to make money. You can never do anything completely alone in business; you have to build a team. What does it mean to form teams? It means you’ll have to pay people with some kind of coin or whatever you work out to get THE BEST out of them that you can’t provide yourself. NEVER ask for anything for FREE. And if someone decides to offer or give you something for FREE, remember that there is a price to pay (I don’t mean to sound so dark, but it is true). If you want to be a thriving artist, you must think in terms of business and entrepreneurship rather than just an artist or you will NOT prosper. And a true entrepreneur takes these principles into account and applies them to his business, so you should go on the journey to become one of the best rappers.
