Recommended blogging platforms

Blog this, Tweet that, update someone else’s status, everyone is blogging in one way or another. If you want to take the next step into the digital world and start a website, a blog can be the perfect starting point. We have put together a recommended list of platforms that you can use to get started.

WordPress

WordPress is the father of the blogging world and is our recommended blogging tool. It is easy to use, well supported, and very flexible in design and often used as a content management system. WordPress has a host of free and premium themes, as well as everything from e-commerce to social media plugins, to expand its functionality.

Mobile types

Movable Type is a very complete blogging system like WordPress with a good support backend. It has a good user base with large sites like the Gawker media sites running it. Its advantage over other platforms is how easy it is to run multiple blogs in a single installation. Its community continues to grow after its switch to an open source format, but we have a very good system comparable to WordPress.

Blogger

Blogger is one of the original blogging sites and services. It is owned by Google and has improved over the years with a simple usable system perfect for inexperienced users. Blogger does not require a hosting service and has no configuration, but it lacks the expansion and customization that other services offer.

Tumblr

Tumblr is a mini blogging system. It’s an expansion of tweeting: more characters. It is a system in constant expansion and has a large number of themes available with easy integration to social networks.

Joomla

Joomla is a complete CMS and it is very easy to create any type of website with the integrated extension system. It’s easy to use and configure and has a good community behind it.

Drupal

Drupal and Joomla are very similar in functionality with Drupal more geared towards community sites. Drupal is a robust blogging platform available and you have the flexibility to run any style of site. It has a good community and is open source in design.

Posterous

A blogging tool integrated into social networks. It has the built-in email posting ability and looks a lot like Tumblr in function. It has a nice mix of themes available but lacks the customization of other services.

Penzu

Penzu is a new platform with privacy as one of its main features, designed for users looking to share their blog with a select few rather than the masses.

It is very much like a Journal in operation with a very simple user backend designed more for writing than customization.

We hope this gives you some clarity on the features and helps you with your choice. If you want any help or advice please contact us
