Esteemed makers RIM are trying to make an impression on the growing tablet market with the new Blackberry Playbook, a unit that could very well take over from the world-renowned iPad as the best device of its kind currently available.

Media fans will be delighted with the excellent facilities on offer at Playbook. The device has two cameras. The first of these is a front-end affair, and where such devices are normally relatively low-spec, this one boasts an excellent 3-megapixel resolution, enough to create vivid, crystal-clear image quality. The rear camera improves on this by offering a 5 million pixel camera. If you want to record video footage, it is difficult to improve the 1080P resolution that is captured. This quality is classified as high definition and you don’t need to be limited to viewing it only on the big screen of Playbooks. Thanks to an HDMI port, connecting to a compatible TV is easy, letting you enjoy your pictures on the big screen. The unit supports multitasking and therefore a good quality processor is necessary to maintain the required speed. The Blackberry does not disappoint in this regard, with a 1 Ghz dual core processor backed up with 1 GB of RAM. A new operating system will be released with this model. Not content with using the system found in mobile phones, RIM has designed new custom software for larger screens. One downside to this is that existing apps can’t be used, but rest assured there will be plenty available as the unit becomes more popular, which is unavoidable given the impressive specs. On the web, the browser benefits from its support for Adobe Flash, providing a full online experience.

With drives like these, size is vital, so it’s nice that the Blackberry Playbook seems ideal for the tasks at hand. At 7 inches, the device’s screen is a good two inches larger than some available tablets, like the Dell Streak, commonly regarded as small. On the other side of the coin, it’s considerably smaller than the iPad, a unit that’s perhaps a bit large. This approach should serve the unit well, and it also pits the Playbook against the other new model available, the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The screen boasts a high resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, which means both web pages and your own media look glorious, crisp and colourful. Multi Touch is supported on the display, which also scores highly for responsiveness due to its capacitive touchpad.

Blackberry may already have a leg up in the tablet market thanks to the name they have established with their mobile phones, and this could well prove to be a popular choice among the business side of the market, as well as consumers attracted to the iPad. but put off by its size and lack of Flash support
